Kebub restaurant review

This was my second visit to the 'famous' Kebub in West Bromwich, and again it succeeded in satisfying my needs. After visiting with friends a couple of weeks back, my parents decided they too wanted to try out the popular Turkish restaurant in town as tweeted about by Mr Lord Alan Sugar himself.

I am a big fan of trying out different cuisines, and there is no doubt about it - this restaurant certainly puts Turkish grub on the map. Putting a healthy spin on kebabs one could say, Kebub offers a range of meat dishes alongside various tasty sides. These include home-made chips, rice, natural yoghurt and mixed veg. The menu itself isn't exactly extensive but there's enough to suit everyone's tastes. I went for the mixed grill again as I like trying a little bit of everything. Included in this dish was a variety of meats including delicious pieces of chicken, succulent shish kebab and spicy chicken wings, alongside two beds of rice and finely grated salad. For a cheeky side, we went for the home-made chips which are to die for! I can't say I am a huge fan of chips but these were definitely worth the extra calories! To accompany our meals we were presented with a range of tasty dips including garlic and herb and hot chilli. I also treated myself to a glass of red which went down a treat!

Overall, this is a lovely little find in the heart of West Bromwich, and one I will definitely be returning to in the foreseeable future. If you are a lover of meats and want to get your mid week kebab fix, then I would certainly recommend you checking this out. I can't say  I am a lover of kebabs usually, but this restaurant offers  freshly cooked food and for a great price too. One thing I was particularly impressed with was the extremely friendly staff who offered a great service all night long (they even opened the door on our exit!) A word of advice - the restaurant itself does get fairly busy so I recommend you book in advance if you do fancy stopping by.

Have you visited Kebub? What do you think of Turkish cuisine?

Bun and Bowl Valentine's Menu Review

On Sunday evening, I was fortunate enough to be invited along to a Valentine's tasting event at The Bun and Bowl in Birmingham. I have never been to The Cube before, let alone this restaurant, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Let's say, it didn't fail to exceed my expectations. I have been meaning to get involved with some 'foodie' events for a while now, so this was the perfect opportunity for me to make myself known, and of course, try lots of exciting new foods. Of course, the company didn't go a miss either. The Birmingham bloggers are a lovely bunch, and I was even introduced to some new faces including the lovely Tasha who organised the event.

Once we had settled in and everyone had ordered their cocktails (which were delicious may I add), we got started on our four course menu. Throughout our meal we were taken through each dish by the wonderful owner who was extremely pleasant like the rest of his staff. We also got to enjoy the likes of Frank Sinatra in the background, thanks to the rather talented violinist.

To start, we were all brought out a curious looking appetiser - a 'cappuccino' of mushroom soup alongside a canapé of toast with wrapped salmon, avocado and caviare. I am not a huge fan of mushroom soup, but I must say, this was very pleasing on the taste buds. It had quite a creamy texture and was just the right temperature to drink whole. I would never have thought of putting soup in a shot glass, but alongside the canapé of toast, this worked perfectly. The salty texture from the soup along with the delicate taste of the canapé made this a winning course. But the fun didn't stop there, to accompany our appetisers, we were each brought out a glass of red champagne, which may I add was also delightful. I have never been a huge champagne drinker but this Moet champagne with Strawberry Coulis was to die for. I would definitely try this again!

Next it was on to the starter - oyster served over ice, topped with lemon juice and croutons. Like many of the other bloggers, I had never tried oysters before (I am not a huge lover of seafood if I am honest), but I thought I would be brave and give it a go! I cant say I was filled with joy. I was warned about the texture beforehand, but what I wasn't prepared for was the overpowering taste of the sea! I somehow managed to eat it but I don't think I will be trying it again any time soon. The struggle to get it in my mouth was enough to put anyone off. Yes I did end up nearly eating the shell too, thanks Ellie! However, there was no doubting that these oysters were fresh, and the perfect aphrodisiac for any Valentine's menu.

For mains we were served a 'slider' burger with a side of fries. The burger itself was made with rib-eye steak - so as you can imagine, delicious! It was cooked to perfection too - medium rare with just the right amount of succulence. I felt like I was eating a mini steak in fact! The fresh brioche bun almost crumbled as I went in for the kill - it was very tasty indeed. Topped with sweet caramelised onions, foie gras and of course the classic lettuce and tomato; this was the perfect little burger. For dips we had two sauces; BBQ and a black truffle sauce which were both lovely. The black truffle was my favourite though, I could have definitely done with a bottle of this!

To bring the event to a close, we were spoilt with one more dish - dessert - leaving the best till last some would say. This consisted of strawberries, meringue alongside a mixture of sorbet. I am not a huge fan of meringue, but this was so light and creamy and worked extremely well with the fruit and tangy sorbet. I loved the use of flavours in this dish and wasn't left craving anything else afterwards. The perfect amount of sweetness; the perfect end to a wonderful evening.

Have you visited Bun and Bowl before? Their Valentine's menu is priced at £30 per head and there are still a few places left if you are still looking for somewhere to book. This includes one starter, one main and one dessert which is pretty good value if you ask me. I can't say I am a Valentine's expert but I wouldn't mind being treated to this exquisite menu on 14th February. If it's tasty food, great service and a relaxed atmosphere you are after, then get yourself down to The Bun and Bowl. I can assure you, you wont be disappointed! To find out more, or to book a table click here.

*Please note: We were invited to this restaurant to try their Valentine's menu. This meal was complimentary and all opinions are my own.

Miller and Carter Steakhouse review

So on Tuesday it was my old man's birthday, and what better way to celebrate than by going for a nice juicy steak. This was my third visit to the Miller and Carter and once again, I wasn't disappointed. Well known for it's steak, the Miller and Carter offers a whole range of delectable steaks along with some of the tastiest sauces and sides.I am not usually one for sticking to the same dishes when I go out, but knowing how good the food is here, I simply couldn't go for anything else. Mushrooms in a cheesy sauce with garlic bread to start, and Rib eye steak, chips with a side lettuce topped with bacon and honey mustard for my main. The food was unreal as usual, even though my steak was a bit too rare for my liking.

We arrived at the Miller and Carter around 6pm where there was not a sole in sight. Perfect - I can't say I am a huge fan of busy restaurants. After taking our seats overlooking the lake at Sutton Park, we were greeted by our waitress, the same lady who tends to serve us every time we pay the restaurant a visit. I don't know if that's just luck, but she's a pleasant little old lady nevertheless. In terms of the service, I would definitely recommend the Miller and Carter. A word of advice though, do book in advance if you can as it starts to fill up quickly after half 6 so you will find yourself waiting around for a table. On this particular evening, the restaurant were testing out a new menu so to speak, which didn't go down too well with the group of friends sitting next to us. However, I can't say there were any outrageous changes on their to cause a fuss about.

Our bill came to a total of £75 which is amazing considering we ordered three starters, three mains and three alcoholic beverages. There wasn't room for a sweet this time round unfortunately but if I had the choice, I definitely would have gone for the chocolate brownie or Belgian chocolate ganache. A great evening with some great quality food; I would definitely recommend the Miller and Carter to those of you who enjoy a steak cooked to perfection along with some delicious extras.

Opus Restaurant Birmingham Review

This is going to be a fairly short one from me as unfortunately my phone decided to die on me last weekend whilst visiting this beautiful restaurant on one of Birmingham's undiscovered back streets. However, it is definitely one to mention and well worth a visit.

I think the first thing that stuck me about this restaurant was it's contemporary exterior. It is very alluring; I certainly wouldn't have been able to walk past without having a nose in. Once inside, I felt completely relaxed. The service was spot on all night and we were made to feel very much at home. The constant flow of wine didn't go a miss either. It is definitely somewhere to visit with friends or your colleagues - serving upmarket food at affordable prices throughout the day. Once inside, we found a mixture of people, but mainly couples and businessmen. Again, the modern interior décor added that extra bit of class to the this simple yet stunning little restaurant.

My new work colleagues and I all decided to go for the market menu which offered three courses for just £16 which is amazing value for money. As we were trying to be 'good', we decided to skip dessert and just go for the two courses, a starter and a main which was a little cheaper at £14. I decided on the salmon tart to start with, which came with a simple salad garnish and a tasty seafood sauce. For my main course, I had a spinach, broccoli and cheese ravioli. I must say even though the portions were fairly small, the food was really delicious. I am not a huge fish fan but the salmon tart was the perfect starter; very light on the palette and a clean eat too. Again, my main course wasn't something I would usually go for but I really enjoyed this vegetarian option so to speak. I love spinach, and again this was a very light and fairly healthy dish (minus the cheese).

Overall, we had a brilliant night. I would definitely recommend Opus to those finer diners out there, who are searching for some quality reasonably priced food in a quiet and relaxed setting. I will certainly be returning to this restaurant, only next time I will be pushing the boat out that little more and trying the al a carte menu.

Baking - Banana Bread

My second attempt at making this delicious treat turned out much better than I had anticipated. I have become quite fond of cooking just lately (baking particularly) after being inspired by so many of you wonderful foodie bloggers. In this post I am going to talk you through the steps required to make this simple yet delicious treat in the comfort of your own home and maybe even getting your banana bread looking as good as mine if you're lucky (just kidding).

Ingredients
So to begin, make sure you have all the ingredients you need - pretty self explanatory. I have missed the milk off this picture but you will need the following:

-285g plain flour (I used wholemeal just to be super healthy)
-1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
-½ tsp salt
-110g butter, plus extra for greasing
-225g caster sugar (I halved the amount of sugar, again to be super super healthy)
-2 free-range eggs
-4 ripe bananas, mashed (Next time I may use more to make up for the lack of sugar)
-85ml buttermilk (or normal milk mixed with 1½ tsp lemon juice or vinegar)
-1 tsp vanilla extract (I didn't use this)

Added Extras
To make my banana bread that extra bit delicious I decided to add pecan nuts to the mixture which are quite pricey but work really well in this dish. I also used a handful of cranberries to give it that extra kick of sweetness.

You will also need:
-A baking dish for your bread mixture
-2 bowls for your mixtures
-A whisk
-Tissue for greasing
-A spoon for measuring
-Weighing scales

The ingredients required
Start by weighing your flour
And then adding your salt to the mixture
Next step is to weigh your butter
And add your sugar to the butter in a separate bowl. Make sure this mixture is light and fluffy (a process known as creaming). You can use yours hands to do this or a spoon like I did.
Next step is to add your two eggs to your sugar and butter mixture. Note - I have a double yolk here, I didn't use three eggs.
Once you've done that, add the four mashed bananas to this mixture. I mashed mine using a fork. It is important that you use black bananas which you can purchase readily from the supermarkets for a fraction of the price. This adds sweetness and makes it easier to mix too.
Next, measure your milk and add your vinegar or lemon to make the buttermilk
Then, add this to the mixture
Along with your flour and salt.
Finally, fold in the flour to the mixture slowly. This will take a while but it's important that you do this gradually.
Add whatever filling you prefer. I used pecan nuts and cranberries on this occasion. The pecans work particularly well with the softness of the bread.
And here it is, your completed mixture all ready to go in the oven at 180 degrees for around 40 minutes - I left mine in for a good 50 minutes to ensure the middle was cooked.
See I told you it wouldn't look that bad!
So there you have it - the finished result and I assure you - it tastes as good as it looks. The perfect mid afternoon snack with a cup of tea without the guilt. I hope you have enjoyed my first baking post. Sure to look out for many more over the upcoming months!

Do you like banana bread? What fillings do you prefer?

Grazing

I love these boxes for various reasons. Not only do they make a delicious snack or treat, they are full of goodness too and are perfect if you're on the go like I often am. Each of your four snacks comes in a pre packed sealed box which keeps them tasting as fresh and delicious as ever.

My sealed graze box
Inside my wonderful box
My four delicious treats
A closer look
In this particular box I got to try some of Graze's new products including their rough blend peanut butter with pretzel sticks and cherry fudge sundae, both of which were amazing! One thing I must say about these boxes, they never fail to deliver - they're always so tasty! If you're new to Graze then I recommend you heading over to their website where you can find a full list of all their delicious snacks on offer. If like me you do want to start receiving these boxes regularly, whether this is once a week or once a month, you are able to tailor this online to meet your needs. I particularly love the range of snacks on offer at Graze - there is something for everybody. You are also able to rate the different products online and let Graze know if you want to receive them again or if you're not so keen, never receive them again. This is particularly useful if you don't like a snack which in my case has to be olives. I knew this before I ordered my first Graze box and made sure I noted this on my personal profile.

The boxes come in at just under £4 and as noted earlier, you can have them delivered weekly, every fortnight or monthly depending on what you prefer. I did used to have one box delivered each month but this isn't something many people keep up. However, the great thing about these boxes is they are always promoted in newspapers and magazines and Graze will often give out free boxes or money off. Once you have signed up with all your details (including your credit card) you can cancel your subscription at any time. Graze have a few different boxes to choose from now including their popular nibble box which I love. I can't wait for my next delivery to see what treats Graze has in store me this time.

What's your favourite Graze box? Are there any snacks you can't live without?

The Dieting Industry | What Really Goes Into Your Mouths

We are a nation obsessed by weight and dieting that’s for sure. A country so desperate to shed that extra pound (or even half a pound) just so that we can treat ourselves to a ‘well deserved’ glass of wine at the weekend. Yet I ask, are we simply living in denial about the fact that the majority of our diets are simply awful, and these days a lot of us are too lazy to walk five minutes up the road to fetch a loaf of bread from the local supermarket? What we need is change and we need it now.

I am no nutritional expert and will never pretend to be but one thing I am is honest. I am honest about the foods that I put into my mouth and the amount of exercise I carry out on a weekly basis. This is something I feel a lot of the UK struggle with, the secret eaters. I have done a lot of research into this just lately and it is really interesting what you can find. That extra bit of oil you use to fry your chips, that bag of crisps you sneak in before you go to bed, that one biscuit at lunchtime with your cup of tea; it all counts. We can no longer be affording to think like this. But what I do think is that what we need re-educating, from a young age especially on the good and the bad foods. Sounds silly really but I think it’s the only way to stop our nation becoming any larger and start being pickier with the foods we choose to eat.

We no longer need to struggle with fad diets or celebrity workout DVD'S. We can do this ourselves with just a bit of common sense and a whole lot of will power. This brings me to the topic I wanted to focus on today primarily, slimming pills, diet pills, whatever you want to call them. A multi millionaire business today, it seems as if everyone is trying them and nobody is really considering the risks. Just because you can purchase them from leading chemists, this does not mean they are good for you or will help you! Okay maybe they do work, but seriously are we not considering the risks of these pills? A lot of these pills are not even legal. The government have already banned the majority of them due to serious side effects including death! Slimming pills are not only said to upset the stomach, I can also imagine them to stop the natural intake  of vital nutrients needed to function, which is seemingly worse than dieting. At least with some diets like Weight watchers you are allowed to have the foods you love, just healthier alternatives which is exactly what I preach.

A popular slimming pill amongst dieters
The fact of the matter is we don’t really know what are in these products and what we are putting into our vulnerable bodies. Just when we thought our bodies haven’t seen enough mistreatment. Many companies including big leaders such as Ebay, Amazon and online chemists are raking in millions of pounds on desperate individuals who are apparently too ‘busy’ to go to the gym. In fact slimming pills can be divided into three groups. Firstly licensed slimming pills prescribed by doctors; unlicensed slimming pills available at private slimming clinics, and slimming pills sold over-the-counter. What ever happened to exercise and a healthy balanced diet I ask?

Fresh fruit and vegetables are key for a healthy diet
We hear so many horror stories today about slimming pills, and no I haven’t tried them personally but there is no evidence to prove that they actually work. We are just giving in to what we see in the media but we cannot simply trust what Beyonce or Kate Moss are doing. These probably have their own personal GP’s who can monitor their day to day activities, but for the likes of me and you all we have is a label which let’s be honest, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I don’t for a second think it is worth taking the risk but the pressure to lose weight quicker than ever today is becoming more ridiculous by the second. Yes we are dealing with an obesity epidemic in the UK but quick fixes will never be the answer.

I was shocked to read the other day that Australia are now also struggling with the rise of obesity. In a country full of sunshine and supermodels, it’s hard to think of anyone struggling with their weight. However with the rise of fast food restaurants across the world and with less people walking or cycling, this was bound to happen. We are also constantly finding new apparently ‘healthy’ foods loaded with sugars and additives which is making a lot of us even more confused on what we should and shouldn't be eating and a bit less lenient to trust what we see on the packaging of foods. One thing is for sure, we are succumbing to advertising and following in the footsteps of America when it comes to eating big.

Fast food may be convenient but it's putting our health at risk
Hopefully after reading this article those of you who are struggling with your weight, whether your'e a size 10 or a size 20 realise more than ever the potential dangers of slimming pills and  losing large amounts of weight in a short space of time. Remember to always check the label. Just because something has a lot of calories, this doesn't necessarily mean it is unhealthy and vice versa.

Fit Inspiration

After working on a weight loss camp in America in 2012, my love for fitness and nutrition increased even more, something I did not think was possible. Motivating others to lose weight through the use of a healthy diet and the right amount of exercise was an extremely rewarding experience, and one I will never forget. Today I have set up this blog in the hope to again inspire others, (give them tips on how to look great without breaking the bank), but most importantly make them feel good about their bodies whilst making the most out of their assets. Yes, those of you who know me may well be thinking, ‘she can talk’ and yes I admit I am one to talk! My struggle with weight over the years is one I wouldn't wish on anyone, however I now understand better than ever what it means to be healthy and how to maintain a desirable body weight. Right now I can honestly say I am the happiest I have ever been in terms of my appearance. I've come a long way and it hasn't been easy but what it has been is achievable.

Let’s get straight to it then and talk about the dreaded D word- my diet. I am always raving on about this word. An obsessed foodie, I love my food just as much as the next person but I know exactly what I should be eating and what I shouldn't, something you may struggle with. Is a jacket potato with cheese and beans really that healthy and what happens if I cut carbs out of my diet altogether you may be wondering. Rest assured I am here to explain all...

Breakfast

For me this 99.9% of the time consists of a bowl of wholegrain porridge with a chopped up banana, a handful of blueberries and a teaspoon of honey. I use water to make my porridge but you can use skimmed milk if you want to add some extra flavour. Also if you aren't keen on my choice of fruit you can use alternatives, these are just my preferences.

Other breakfast options may include:

One or two boiled eggs on two small pieces of wholemeal toast with low fat margarine.

Protein pancakes made with 1.5 scoops of chocolate protein, 2 egg whites, a small amount of flour to thicken and a banana (or any other HEALTHY recipe). This particular recipe should make roughly 4/5 small pancakes but obviously you can alter this accordingly.

A bowl of muesli with skimmed milk/natural yoghurt and some added fruit (why not).

If you’re one of those people who doesn't do breakfast, then try a piece of wholemeal toast spread with organic low fat peanut butter (trust me this is heavenly).

Or alternatively you could make a healthy smoothie using any fruits or pure fruit juices you may have lying around, along with a spoonful of natural yoghurt or a splash of skimmed milk. You can always make it sweeter by adding some honey if you have a natural sweet tooth like me, or even add some spinach to give it that extra kick.

Lunch

Lunch which is usually eaten at work consists of a pre packed wholemeal sandwich (pitta, wrap, bread, whatever you desire just make sure it is wholemeal) loaded with chicken breast and salad (minus any dressing unless I'm feeling naughty).

Alternatives to this may include a jacket potato with beans or tuna and some side salad (no cheese or a small heaping of low fat cheese/cottage cheese).

An omelette made me with 2/3 eggs and a splash of skimmed milk along with a filling of your choice (chicken, low fat cheese, vegetables). I usually cook this using fry light or coconut oil staying away from high fat vegetable oils as these can add hundreds of calories to your meal. In fact if I can stay away from frying any of my food then I will. I much prefer baking my food, scrambled eggs being another alternative to an omelette, something you can do in the microwave without the use of oil.

Wholemeal pasta and chicken with a low fat sauce (tomato based preferably). You could add some side salad or some vegetables to the dish to turn this into a healthier alternative or even add a small helping of low fat cheese to give it some extra flavour.

Pitta pizza- a recipe taken from camp. For this you will need a wholemeal base (pitta) some tomato purée, low fat cheese and some rocket (you can add other toppings too but make sure any meats are cooked beforehand).

Home-made soup- an easy way of getting your 5 a day in one dish. All you will need are some vegetables, seasoning, water and stock, oh and of course a blender. Try sweet potato and butter-nut squash if you fancy something different, this is both tasty and nourishing.

Beans on toast- surprisingly not as bad as you think. Just remember to use wholemeal toast with low fat margarine along with reduced salt baked beans if you can.

Dinner

For dinner I usually stick to chicken or turkey (turkey being the leaner healthier meat) which is my main source of protein. Then I will have a small amount of carbs (handful) such as wholemeal pasta, brown rice or a sweet potato. For my source of veg I love using mushrooms, peppers, courgettes, broccoli or if I am feeling lazy I will have some side salad.

I also like red meat which mainly includes a lean piece of steak which I have alongside a jacket potato/sweet potato and side salad. It is important to get your weekly intake of red meats too when ensuring you have enough iron in your diet.

I also make a lot of home-made favourites such as spaghetti bolognese, chilli con carne and chicken curry. However instead of using mince meat I will use Quorn products. I also use wholemeal carb alternatives including brown rice and whole wheat pasta, and of course I cut out the sides (yes that unfortunately means the bread).

Chicken/prawn stir fry packed full of healthy vegetables and a low calorie sauce. I also am hooked on rice noodles which are very low in fat and act as a great source of carbohydrates.

Chicken wholemeal wraps with vegetables of your choice (peppers and onions are great) alongside a low calorie dressing.

Some sort of fish which for me usually consists of cod as I am not a big fan of seafood unfortunately, brown rice and vegetables. If you are feeling lazy don’t forget you can use frozen vegetables. Even though these aren't as nutritious, they still count towards your 5 a day.

Snacks

In terms of snacking I tend to stick to unsalted nuts (a small amount only as these can be fattening but great for getting your daily intake of healthy fats).

1 or 2 rice crackers or Ryvita with a small heaping of organic low fat peanut butter is also a great source of protein and keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

I also have a lot of fruit throughout the day to keep my sugar levels up including grapes, raspberries, apples etc.

Low fat yoghurt or natural yoghurt is also great if you’re craving something sweet and dessert like. Add a teaspoon of honey to your natural yoghurt and some fruit to make a tasty and healthy dessert.

Boiled eggs are a great source of protein and also make a great snack too!

Hummus and carrots have to be one of my favourite snacks, nutritious and filling, just make sure you try and stick to the low calorie hummus as the full fat hummus contains a lot of oil. You can also swap the carrots to a different type of vegetable, peppers and cucumber also being a favourite of mine.

Drinks

I drink plenty of water and when I say plenty, I mean plenty! I am constantly thirsty so this is the main reason why I love water so much, but it is also a great way to detox the body and keep your cravings under control.

Another favourite drink of mine is tea, usually green tea or if I fancy a real 'cuppa' I will use low fat milk. I don't take sugar in my tea either again cutting down the calories.

A small class of pure fruit juice from concentrate (cranberry or orange being my preferences), just try not to overdo it in terms of sugar intake. If you are feeling low on sugar this is probably due to boredom more than anything. Eat some fruit or put a smoothie together to recharge your energylevels.

Finally if you enjoy a small tipple like me at the weekend, try and stick to a small glass of wine or a vodka and diet coke/cranberry juice. Remember ladies alcohol is probably the worst when it comes down to hidden calories, so take note of this if you are trying to lose weight.
